"On the shoulders of Giants..."

Dennis Ritchie, the creator of C programming and a co-developer of UNIX has passed away, aged 70.

His impact on our lives will go largely unacknowledged, however many of the things we take for granted in everyday life have been created in languages built upon, or with references to C - for instance, iPhone or iPad applications!

It's interesting to note the difference in media coverage between Mr Ritchie and Mr Jobs at the uncannily close times of their passing - despite having arguably similar impacts upon modern life. In fact, it is actually hard to imagine the modern world being as it is now without the impression either of them have made on the way we live our lives.

In reference to Dennis Ritchie, Linus Torvalds, a developer of Linux, once said that he “had hoisted [himself] up on the shoulders of giants.” A fitting accolade for one of the true pioneers of our time.

Technology or magic?

Arthur C. Clarke... a remarkable man, no doubt. Where do these 'laws' end? Is nothing impossible?

The laws...

1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

The next 'Social Network'?

Rumour has it that Sony are in the process of acquiring the rights to Steve Jobs authorised biography, which will surely pave the way to the production of the blockbuster movie.

It seems that the boom years of interactive technology are now sexy enough for Hollywood following the success of last years 'Social Network' facebook biopic, which included a cameo from Justin Timberlake! It is reported that Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan) could produce!

Definitely something worth spending valuable hard drive downloading...

BBC cuts

So the BBC are to cut 2000 jobs and save £670million in it's biggest ever shake up.

For us this means.... even more repeats, amalgamated local radio - although how this can then be termed local is beyond me and reduced services, particularly during the day.

So is the licence fee going to be reduced in acknowledgement of the poorer service we will receive? Of course not!

Reason 6

So.... Propellerhead appear to have finally caved and added audio recording into Reason in Version 6 by combining Record and Reason into a 64 bit offering! Looks pretty tasty too with the SSL modelling EQ and master buss compressor as well as some rather interesting looking effects for creative use including a playable stutter/echo effect... sounds ideal for dubstep... Which will hopefully die and crawl under a very large rock quite soon!

Steve Jobs

Is it fitting that I start this blog with a story of someone passing? Not sure what the omen is here...

Steve Jobs is a big loss to Apple and to all of us who love technology. Even if you're not an Apple fan his legacy of products and innovations must be acknowledged as they have revolutionised the world we live in.

The true sadness of his passing, at a relatively young age, is in the sorrow that will be felt by his family and we should spare a moment to think of their loss and remind ourselves that every day with those we love is a blessing.
